Dr. Robert Ménard - Biography
Dr. Robert Ménard
Dr. Robert Ménard is currently Head of the Enzymology Group at BRI and is responsible for a team of 12 scientists consisting of technicians, research officers and postdoctoral fellows. He joined the Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) in 1987 as a Research Associate. Dr. Ménard received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Montreal in 1985. He completed his training at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is also the acting manager of the HTS Facility at the BRI. Moreover, Dr. Ménard holds a cross-appointment as an Associate Professor in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Montreal and is a member of the International Consortium on Antivirals (ICAV). The research activities of Dr. Ménard cover various topics in the general field of enzymology. His main area of research focuses on the action and inhibition mechanism of proteases, particularly cysteine proteases, using an approach centered on the establishment of structure-function relationships for these enzymes. He has also contributed directly to the design of novel cysteine protease inhibitors. Dr. Ménard has authored or co-authored more than 75 publications and reviews, and his work on cathepsins has earned him an international reputation as one of the leading experts in this area. As a result, he has been invited to give a number of presentations at international meetings, universities and pharmaceutical companies. He is also a reviewer for several scientific journals, and for grant applications.
