Denis Groleau is Leader of the Microbial and Enzymatic Technology Group at the National Research Council of Canada's Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI). He obtained a B.Sc. in Microbiology at Université Laval in 1973, a M.Sc. in Microbiology at McGill University in 1976, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology at the University of Guelph in 1981. His current research interests include: Isolation of new microorganisms, methanotrophic and methylotrophic microorganisms, Pichia pastoris and Methylobacterium extorquens as technology platforms, microbial products, recombinant protein production using different various systems (Escherichia coli, P. pastoris, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, M.extorquens, and others), fermentation process development, optimization and scale-up, biodegradable and biocompatible materials, bioproducts, bioactive peptides and advanced fermentation monitoring. In the last 20 years, he has contributed to a large number and variety of industrial projects in the areas of applied microbiology and microbial fermentation technology. In addition, he has published 30 peer-reviewed papers, obtained 5 patents and made over 50 contributions to national and international conferences. Dr. Groleau is a regular reviewer for various granting agencies, journals and venture capital firms. In 2004, he served as Chair of NSERC's Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Panel.
