Rénald Gilbert is the Interim leader of the Genomics and Gene Therapy Vectors Group at the National Research Council Canada's Biotechnology Research Institute (NRC-BRI). He received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from McMaster University in Hamilton (Ontario) in 1994. He joined NRC-BRI in 2002 after his postdoctoral training, first at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City, and then at the Montreal Neurological Institute. For over 10 years, he has been working on the development of a treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy using gene therapy. He is interested on all the aspects pertaining to the production and optimization of viral vectors for gene transfer (mainly adenovirus and lentivirus) and recombinant protein production..
